Choosing flame-retardant and arc-rated workwear

Flame-retardant (FR) clothing is made from fabric that stops burning once the flame is removed and will not melt onto the skin the way standard polyester can. This range comes from Orbit International and Beeswift and covers FR coveralls, jackets, trousers, sweatshirts, polos, base layers and hi-vis — including GORE-TEX® PYRAD® arc-rated hi-vis for the wettest conditions.

Match the certification to the hazard: EN ISO 11612 for heat and flame; EN ISO 14116 for limited flame spread (index 1 to 3, with 3 the highest); EN ISO 11611 for welding; EN 1149-5 for anti-static performance in flammable atmospheres; and IEC 61482-2 for electric arc, with an arc rating in cal/cm². Many garments here carry several of these, often together with EN ISO 20471 hi-vis.

Inherent FR fabrics keep their protection for the life of the garment, while treated FR fabrics rely on a finish tested to a stated number of washes, so follow the care label. Wear FR or natural-fibre layers underneath — a polyester layer under FR outerwear can still melt.

What to look for

  • EN ISO 11612 for flame and heat; IEC 61482-2 for arc
  • Arc rating (cal/cm²) at or above the figure in your arc-flash assessment
  • EN 1149-5 anti-static for flammable atmospheres and petrochemical sites
  • FR or natural-fibre layers underneath, never polyester
