Choosing hearing protection
Under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005, employers must make hearing protection available when daily noise exposure reaches 80 dB(A), and make wearing it compulsory at 85 dB(A). This range covers disposable and reusable ear plugs, ear defenders and helmet-mounted ear muffs from 3M (including Peltor and E-A-R), Howard Leight, Moldex, Uvex and Beeswift.
Every product carries an SNR (single number rating) in decibels, but more is not always better. The aim is to bring noise at the ear down to between 70 and 80 dB(A). Over-protection cuts people off from warning signals and colleagues, so they take the protection off — which is when hearing damage happens.
Ear plugs are more comfortable in heat and alongside other PPE; ear defenders suit intermittent noise, where people need to take protection on and off quickly. If your team wears helmets, helmet-mounted defenders clip into the helmet slots — check the attachment matches your helmet. Plug dispensers keep disposables clean and to hand at site entrances.
