Choosing hi-vis trousers

Hi-vis trousers are usually certified to EN ISO 20471 Class 1 or Class 2 on their own. Their real value is in combination: Class 1 trousers worn with a Class 2 waistcoat or jacket can give a Class 3 outfit, which many road sites require — as long as the manufacturer has certified that combination.

Choose the construction for the work: polycotton combat trousers for general site work, waterproof over-trousers for wet conditions, and rail-compliant orange trousers to RIS-3279-TOM for trackside work. Flame-retardant hi-vis trousers are available where there is a flash or arc risk.

Check leg length options — regular, short and tall fits reduce trip hazards from trousers that drag, and damaged reflective bands at the hem are one of the most common reasons a garment stops meeting its class.

What to look for

  • Class 1 or 2 alone; combine with a certified jacket or waistcoat for Class 3
  • Knee-pad pockets for kneeling work
  • Orange RIS-3279-TOM for rail
  • Short, regular and tall leg lengths
