Choosing a powered air respirator (PAPR)
A powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) uses a battery-powered fan to draw air through filters and deliver it to a hood, helmet or visor. This range includes 3M Versaflo kits, headtops and batteries, Gentex PureFlo PureLite visor systems and spares, and the Centurion Concept Air respirator kit.
Loose-fitting PAPRs are classed TH1, TH2 or TH3 under EN 12941, with assigned protection factors of 10, 20 and 40. Because they do not rely on a face seal, they need no face-fit test and can be worn with a beard — a real advantage on long shifts, in hot conditions, and for workers who cannot get a good fit from a mask. Many combine respiratory, eye and face protection in one unit.
Budget for running costs as well as the kit: spare filters, pre-filters, batteries and chargers are listed for the main units.
What to look for
- TH2 for most dust work; TH3 for higher concentrations
- No face-fit test needed for loose-fitting hoods and visors
- A second battery for shifts longer than one charge
