Choosing respiratory protection
Respiratory protective equipment (RPE) falls into three groups, and this range covers all of them: disposable dust masks rated FFP1, FFP2 or FFP3; reusable half and full face masks fitted with replaceable filters; and powered air respirators that deliver filtered air to a hood, helmet or visor. Brands include 3M, Moldex, Gentex PureFlo, Centurion and Beeswift.
Choose by contaminant and concentration. For dust such as silica, wood and plaster, FFP3 or a P3 filter gives the highest particle protection. For vapours and gases you need a gas filter with the right letter — A for organic vapours, B for inorganic gases, E for acid gases, K for ammonia — often combined as ABEK. Under COSHH, tight-fitting masks must be face-fit tested for each wearer, and wearers need to be clean-shaven where the mask seals.
For long shifts, bearded workers, or anyone who cannot get a good seal from a mask, a loose-fitting powered respirator is often the better answer: it needs no face-fit test and is cooler to wear.
What to look for
- FFP3 or P3 for silica and other hazardous dusts
- Gas filter letters matched to the substance (A, B, E, K)
- Face-fit testing for every tight-fitting mask wearer
- Change gas filters on schedule — don't wait until the wearer can smell the contaminant
