What to look for
Look for the CI marking
CI means the sole has passed the cold insulation test in EN ISO 20345, so your feet lose less heat through the ground. It matters most where you stand still on frozen ground or concrete.
Lined boots for everyday cold
A Thinsulate or fur lining keeps feet warm on most UK winter sites. Pair it with a waterproof (S3 or WR) boot so wet ground doesn't undo the warmth.
Thermal wellingtons for wet and freezing
Polyurethane safety wellingtons such as Dunlop Purofort Thermo+ and Bekina Thermolite are rated down to -50°C, for farms, food plants and cold stores where it is both wet and very cold.
Socks count too
A thermal work sock adds warmth without a bigger boot. Try boots on with the socks you will wear on site.
Frequently asked questions
- What does CI mean on safety boots?
- CI stands for cold insulation. It is an extra marking under EN ISO 20345 for boots whose sole has passed a cold insulation test, so less heat is lost to cold ground.
- Are winter safety boots waterproof?
- Not always. A lining keeps you warm but not dry. Look for S3, S5 or a WR marking as well. Most of the lined boots on this page are also waterproof, and wellingtons are waterproof by design.
- What is the warmest safety boot for a cold store?
- For cold stores and freezers, thermal polyurethane wellingtons are rated lowest: Dunlop Purofort Thermo+ and Bekina Thermolite to -50°C, and Bekina Steplite X Thermoprotec to -40°C.
- Can I order winter boots for a whole team?
