Choosing safety wellingtons
Safety wellingtons are moulded in one piece from rubber, PVC or polyurethane, so there are no seams for water to come through. Nearly all of the wellingtons here are rated S5: a 200-joule toecap, antistatic, energy absorbing, with a puncture-resistant midsole and cleated outsole — the right choice for wet construction sites, agriculture, drainage and washdown areas.
Polyurethane wellingtons such as the Dunlop Purofort range are lighter and insulate better than rubber or PVC, which matters for people standing in cold water or working in chilled food areas. Check for the CI marking where cold insulation is needed.
In food processing and dairy, look for resistance to fats and animal waste as well as the safety class, and choose white or light colours where hygiene zoning uses footwear colour.
What to look for
- S5 where there is a puncture risk; S4 only where there is none
- CI (cold insulation) for cold stores, chilled areas and winter outdoor work
- FO if fuel or oil is present — optional under the 2022 standard
- A good heel grip matters: loose wellingtons cause trips
