What to look for
Read the EN 343 numbers
EN 343 gives two classes: water penetration first, then breathability, each from 1 to 4. Class 3 or 4 for water is what you want for all-day rain; a higher breathability class keeps you drier inside when you're working hard.
Check the hi-vis class
Work beside fast roads usually needs Class 3. A Class 3 jacket meets it on its own; a Class 2 jacket reaches Class 3 with hi-vis trousers only where the pair is certified that way.
Pick the shape for the job
Bombers and short jackets suit plant operators and anyone climbing in and out of cabs. 3/4-length coats and parkas give more cover for standing work. Padded and 4-in-1 jackets add warmth for winter.

- What does EN 343 3:3 mean on a jacket?
- The first number is water penetration resistance and the second is breathability, each on a scale of 1 to 4. 3:3 is a good all-weather rating for outdoor work. See our EN 343 guide.
- Is a hi-vis jacket Class 3 on its own?
