About Dupont
DuPont was established in 1802 and is the reference point for protective clothing in the same way 3M is for respirators. Tyvek — its flash-spun high-density polyethylene — has led the Type 4, 5 and 6 coverall market for over two decades, and the reason is a genuine material advantage: it is a barrier to particulates while remaining permeable to air and water vapour, so it protects without turning into a sweat box.
Tyvek 500 Xpert is the workhorse Type 5-B/6-B coverall for asbestos, dust, insulation and general contamination work. Tyvek 600 steps up to Type 4-B/5-B/6-B for liquid spray. Above that, Tychem 2000, 4000 and 6000 handle serious chemical exposure through to Type 3 liquid-jet protection, with barrier data published per chemical. Many garments also carry EN 14126 for infective agents, EN 1149-5 for antistatic and EN 1073-2 for radioactive particulate.
The Type numbering is where buyers most often get it wrong — a Type 5/6 suit is not a chemical suit, and specifying one for a job that needs Type 3 is a serious error. - Tyvek covers Type 4, 5 and 6 protection against particulates and light liquid splash; Tychem is the chemical range, going up to Type 3 liquid-jet protection with published permeation data.
- Is a Tyvek 500 suit suitable for chemicals?
- Only for light splash — Tyvek 500 is Type 5/6. Genuine chemical work needs Tychem at Type 3 or Type 4.
