What to look for
Read the cal/cm² rating
Open-arc testing gives a rating in cal/cm²: ATPV or EBT50, and on newer garments ELIM, the level with no chance of a burn. The garment's rating must be above the incident energy in your arc flash risk assessment.
APC 1 or APC 2
The box test classes garments as APC 1 (4 kA) or APC 2 (7 kA). It is a separate test from the cal/cm² rating, and many specifications ask for both.
FR is not the same as arc-rated
EN ISO 11612 flame-retardant clothing protects against heat and flame, but only an EN 61482-2 rating tells you it was tested against an electric arc.
Layer to build protection
Wearing an arc-rated base layer under an arc-rated outer layer raises total protection. Never wear ordinary synthetic base layers underneath: they can melt onto skin.
Frequently asked questions
What does ATPV mean on arc flash clothing?
ATPV (arc thermal performance value) is the incident energy, in cal/cm², at which there is a 50% chance of a second-degree burn through the fabric. EBT50 is used instead when the fabric breaks open first. ELIM is a newer, more cautious figure.
What is the difference between APC 1 and APC 2?
They are classes from the box test in EN 61482-1-2: APC 1 is tested at 4 kA and APC 2 at 7 kA. APC 2 is the higher protection.
Is flame-retardant clothing arc-rated?
Not automatically. Only garments tested and rated to EN 61482-2 are arc-rated. Check the product page for the rating.
How do I wash arc-rated workwear?
Follow the care label. Inherent FR fabrics keep their protection for the life of the garment; avoid fabric softener and bleach, and repair or replace damaged garments rather than patching with non-FR material.
