What to look for
Fit testing is a legal must
Tight-fitting masks only protect if they seal to your face, and UK employers must have each wearer face fit tested on the exact model they use. See what face fit testing involves and our fit testing kits.
Clean-shaven to seal
Stubble and beards break the seal, even a day's growth. Wearers who can't be clean-shaven need a loose-fitting powered respirator instead.
NR, R and D
NR means single shift only; R means it can be reused for more than one shift. D means the mask passed the dolomite clogging test, so it stays easier to breathe through in dusty work.
Valved for comfort
An exhalation valve lets warm, moist air out, which cuts heat and fogging over a long shift. It doesn't reduce the protection for the wearer.
Frequently asked questions
What does FFP3 mean?
FFP3 is the top class of filtering facepiece under EN 149. It filters at least 99% of airborne particles, with total inward leakage of no more than 2%. HSE gives it an assigned protection factor of 20.
When do I need FFP3 rather than FFP2?
When the dust is more hazardous or the levels are higher, such as silica from cutting concrete or stone, or hardwood dust. Your COSHH assessment sets the protection you need. See our mask class guide.
How long does an FFP3 mask last?
An NR mask is for a single shift. An R mask can be reused across shifts if it is clean, undamaged and still easy to breathe through. Replace any mask that gets wet, damaged or hard to breathe through.
Do FFP3 masks need fit testing?
Yes. Every tight-fitting mask, FFP3 included, must be face fit tested on each wearer before use. See what is face fit testing.
