S3 Safety Boots
S3 is the rating most UK construction and outdoor sites ask for. Every boot here is rated S3 (or S7, which adds a fully water-resistant boot) under EN ISO 20345: a 200 J toe cap, a puncture-resistant midsole, a water-resistant upper and a cleated sole.

What to look for
What S3 adds over S1P
S1P has a toe cap and puncture-resistant midsole but no water resistance. S3 adds a water-resistant upper and a cleated sole for grip on loose ground, which is why site rules usually ask for it.
S3, S3L or S3S
Under the 2022 standard, plain S3 has a steel midsole. S3L and S3S have a non-metal midsole, tested with a thicker or thinner nail (S is the tougher test). All three are S3 boots.
Water-resistant is not waterproof
S3 tests the upper only. For all-day wet ground, look for WR or S7, where the whole boot is tested in water. See waterproof safety boots.

Frequently asked questions
What does S3 mean on safety boots?
S3 is a rating under EN ISO 20345. It means a 200 J toe cap, an antistatic and energy-absorbing heel, a water-resistant upper, a puncture-resistant midsole and a cleated outsole.
Are S3 safety boots waterproof?
S3 boots have a water-resistant upper, which copes with puddles and wet grass. For standing in water all day, choose a boot rated WR or S7, where the whole boot is tested.
What is the difference between S3 and S7?
S7 is S3 plus WR: the whole boot, not just the upper, passes a water-resistance test. S7 was added in the 2022 version of the standard.
Do S3 boots have steel toe caps?
Some do and some don't. S3 only says the toe cap passes the 200 J test. Many boots here use composite toe caps, which are lighter and metal-free.
