How to choose hi-vis clothing
High-visibility clothing is certified to EN ISO 20471 in three classes, set by how much fluorescent background material and retroreflective tape a garment carries. The class you need depends on the speed of traffic near your people and how much else is going on around them — not on the garment type.
As a rule of thumb, Class 2 suits most general site and roadside work, while motorways, high-speed roads and rail environments call for Class 3. Garments can be combined: Class 1 trousers worn with a Class 2 waistcoat give Class 3 overall. Only sleeved garments can reach Class 3 on their own — a sleeveless hi-vis vest cannot.
The range includes rail-compliant garments to RIS-3279-TOM, flame-retardant and arc-rated hi-vis for utilities and energy work, GORE-TEX® Workwear for the wettest conditions, and ladies fit options across several styles.
What to look for
- Class 2 for general sites; Class 3 near fast traffic and on rail
- RIS-3279-TOM for Network Rail work — orange, not yellow
- Flame-retardant or arc-rated hi-vis where there is a flash or arc risk
- Replace faded or damaged garments — they may no longer meet their class
